Stump Grinding Across Columbus, OH

A.S.H. Tree Service is based in Reynoldsburg, on the east side of Columbus, and grinds stumps across the city from there. Columbus is Ohio's capital and its largest city, and many of its older neighborhoods were planted with ash and silver maple that are now coming out, which leaves a stump behind on lot after lot. Emerald ash borer was first confirmed in Ohio in 2003, according to Ohio State University Extension, and the ash trees it killed are a large share of the stumps we grind today. The Columbus tree service page covers everything else we do in the city, and the service areas page lists the towns around it.

Eduardo was fantastic to work with. Quick to schedule and helpful by listening to what my goals and concerns were. I had a smaller project so he was able to squeeze me in the very next day after providing an estimate. Quality work that was reasonably priced.

The work crew knew what I wanted them to do. They showed up on time and started to work, checking with me to make sure that everything was done to my satisfaction. They did a great job with cleanup. Eduardo was a pleasant person and professional with his job.

I had reached out to get a quote after our Black Walnut Tree had some large branches break off in high winds. Ed made some recommendations and talked me through what branches he would remove. His team showed up on time and did a great job! Not only do our trees look great and healthy, but his team did a great job cleaning up the yard after.

How Stump Grinding Works, Start to Finish

Stump grinding starts before the grinder is unloaded. We walk the yard, mark anything buried near the stump that we know about, and ask about the things only you know about: sprinkler lines, low-voltage lighting, an invisible dog fence. Public utility lines get marked through Ohio's one-call center, OHIO811, which costs the homeowner nothing.

Then the grinder chews the stump down a few inches at a time, sweeping side to side across the face of the wood. A typical job takes the stump several inches below the soil line, enough to mow over and lay sod or seed on top. If you want to plant in the same spot or put a patio there, tell us, and we grind deeper and wider. Surface roots that run out from the stump are ground back along with it, so the lawn does not keep catching the mower on them.

Grinding throws chips, so we screen windows, cars and siding that sit close by. When it is done, the hole is full of chips mixed with soil. You choose what happens next: chips raked back into the hole and left to settle, or chips hauled off so the hole can be filled with topsoil and seeded. For the full service, see stump grinding.

What Sets the Price of Stump Grinding in Columbus

No two stumps cost the same to grind, which is why the estimate is a visit and not a guess over the phone. The things that move the price are the ones we measure on site:

  • Width at the ground. Grinding time grows with the diameter, and old stumps flare wider at the base than the trunk ever looked.
  • How many stumps. Several stumps on one visit cost less each than the same stumps booked one at a time.
  • Access. A gate narrower than the machine, a back yard behind a fence, or a slope down to the stump all change the job.
  • What is in the wood. Old fence wire, nails from a clothesline, or rocks the roots grew around dull the teeth and slow everything down.
  • The chips. Leaving them is the cheapest option. Hauling them and bringing topsoil adds to it.

If the tree is still standing, grinding is quoted with the removal on the same visit. For how removal pricing works, see what tree removal costs.

Columbus Tree Lawn Stumps Belong to the City

The tree lawn, the strip of grass between the sidewalk and the street, is not yours to dig in, even though you mow it. A street tree in Columbus belongs to the city, and so does its stump. The Forestry section of Columbus Recreation and Parks is responsible for more than 125,000 street trees, and any work on one, or within its root zone, needs a Forestry permit and a certified arborist.

So if the stump you want gone is in the tree lawn, start with the city. If it sits anywhere on your own lot, front yard, back yard or along the fence, it is yours to decide, and that is the stump grinding in Columbus we do. If you are not sure where the line falls, we will tell you on the visit before anything is quoted.

Grind It or Leave It? Why Old Stumps Cause Trouble

Leaving a stump costs nothing today, and some people are happy to. It is worth knowing what a stump does over the next few years before you decide:

  • It can sprout. Maples and many other trees push up a ring of shoots from a fresh stump, and they keep coming back after you cut them.
  • It rots slowly, in place. A large hardwood stump can take many years to break down, and rotting wood draws insects and fungi.
  • It is in the way. Mowers, trimmers and feet find it, and it fixes where a new bed, a fence or a play set can go.

Pulling a stump out by the roots leaves a crater and needs heavy equipment on the lawn. Chemical stump removers take months, sometimes longer, and still leave the wood to dig out. Grinding is the quick way to get the ground back: one visit, and the spot can be seeded the same week.

Stump Grinding After a Storm or a Tree Removal

Most of the stumps we grind in Columbus are from trees that came down on purpose or in a storm. On August 11, 2026, the National Weather Service measured an 82 mph wind gust at John Glenn Columbus International Airport, and trees came down across the east side of the city that afternoon. Once the wood is cleared, the stump is what is left.

If the tree is still up, or still lying across the yard, book the whole job together. Tree removal in Columbus covers taking it down and clearing it, and storm damage tree removal covers what happens after a tree fails. The stump grinding gets quoted at the same visit, so you get one price and one crew.

Frequently asked questions

How deep do you grind a stump?

Several inches below the soil line on a standard job, which is enough to mow over and seed. If you plan to replant in the same spot or build over it, tell us at the estimate and we grind deeper and wider.

Do you grind out the roots as well?

We grind back the surface roots that run out from the stump, so they stop catching the mower. Roots deeper and farther out are left in the ground, where they break down on their own.

What happens to the wood chips?

You choose. We can rake them back into the hole to settle, leave them in a pile for mulch, or haul them away so the hole can be filled with topsoil and seeded.

Can I plant a new tree where the old stump was?

It is easier a few feet to one side, where the soil is not full of old roots and chips. If it has to be the same spot, we grind deeper and the chips should be swapped for topsoil first.

Do I need to call 811 before stump grinding?

Public lines should be marked before any grinding near them, and Ohio's one-call center, OHIO811, does that at no cost to you. It does not mark private lines like sprinklers or yard lighting, so tell us where those run.

Who removes a stump in the tree lawn in Columbus?

The city. A street tree and its stump belong to Columbus, so report it through the Columbus 311 Customer Service Center rather than hiring anyone to grind it.

How much does stump grinding cost in Columbus?

It depends on the width of each stump, how many there are, how easy they are to reach, and what you want done with the chips. The estimate visit is free, and you get one written price for every stump on the property.
