Tree Removal Across Canal Winchester, OH

Canal Winchester sits across the line between Fairfield and Franklin counties, southeast of Columbus. It was founded in 1828, when the Ohio and Erie Canal came through Reuben Dove's wheat field and he laid out a town beside it instead of suing the state. That history still shows in the trees: an old village middle where big maples and oaks stand close to old houses, and newer streets on former farmland around it. We come down from Reynoldsburg, a short run. For pruning and the rest of what we do in town, see tree service in Canal Winchester, and the service areas page lists the other towns.

What A.S.H. customers write about comes back to the same three things: the crew turned up when it said it would, did the work that was agreed, and left the yard clean. Eduardo was fantastic to work with. Quick to schedule and helpful by listening to what my goals and concerns were. I had a smaller project so he was able to squeeze me in the very next day after providing an estimate. Quality work that was reasonably priced.

The work crew knew what I wanted them to do. They showed up on time and started to work, checking with me to make sure that everything was done to my satisfaction. They did a great job with cleanup. Eduardo was a pleasant person and professional with his job.

I had reached out to get a quote after our Black Walnut Tree had some large branches break off in high winds. Ed made some recommendations and talked me through what branches he would remove. His team showed up on time and did a great job! Not only do our trees look great and healthy, but his team did a great job cleaning up the yard after.

Dead Ash Along Canal Winchester Fence Lines

Emerald ash borer has killed most of the standing ash in central Ohio, and around Canal Winchester a lot of those dead trees are still up: along fence lines, at the back of lots, and on the edge of the fields the newer streets back onto. Emerald ash borer was first confirmed in Ohio in 2003, according to Ohio State University Extension, and the ash it killed has had years to dry out.

That matters because dead ash goes brittle fast, so brittle that no careful climber will rope into one. It cannot be taken apart the way a live tree can. It has to be reached from outside, from the bucket or with rigging set from a sound neighboring tree, and every year it stands it gets less predictable. A dead ash near a house, a drive or a play area is a job for this season, not a later one. Dead ash on city land, in parks and along streets, is the City of Canal Winchester's to handle. The ones on your lot are yours.

Looking down from the bucket at the yard and the trunk below: tree removal by A.S.H. Tree Service, serving Canal Winchester, OH

How a Dead Ash Comes Down Safely

Nobody climbs it. We read the tree from the ground first: where the bark is sloughing off, which limbs are already cracked, and what it would hit falling in each direction. Where the truck can sit decides the whole plan, because the bucket has to reach the crown from outside the tree. On a soft or awkward lot, we tell you at the estimate, not on the morning of the job.

Brittle wood is cut small. Long, heavy sections that are routine on a live tree can snap and swing on a dead one, so we take less per cut and make more cuts. Once the crown is off, the trunk comes down in rounds onto ground we have cleared. Then the stump can be ground below grade so you can seed over it. See stump grinding for that step.

The Old Village and the Newer Edges

In the old part of town, the trees went in generations ago and the houses were already there. Mature maples and oaks stand over porches, garages and neighboring roofs, and taking one down is careful rope work in a tight space: the crown in pieces, each one lowered, the trunk in short rounds. Out on the newer edges it is the opposite: younger trees, open ground and room for the truck, where a tree can sometimes be felled whole into a cleared lane.

Before anything on the street side is quoted, check whose tree it is. The strip between the sidewalk and the road usually belongs to the city, not to the house, and so does a tree standing in it. We will help you work out where the line runs at the estimate.

Storm Damage and Emergency Tree Removal

Storms reach Canal Winchester most summers. On August 11, 2026, the National Weather Service measured an 82 mph wind gust at John Glenn Columbus International Airport, and the June 29, 2012 derecho brought gusts of 70 to 80 mph across the area. Dead ash is often the first thing to fail in wind like that.

If a tree is on your house or across your drive, call 614-701-0806 rather than use the form. We are close by, and we will give you an honest time. See storm damage tree removal for how we take apart a tree that has already failed.

What Tree Removal in Canal Winchester Costs

A dead ash usually costs more to remove than the same tree would have alive, because it cannot be climbed and has to be cut small from the bucket. Beyond that, the price comes from the height and spread, what is underneath, whether the truck can reach, and how much cleanup you want. We give a written price after a look, and the estimate is free. For how pricing works, see what tree removal costs. Nearby, we also do tree removal in Groveport, Lithopolis and Pickerington.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't you just climb the dead ash in my yard?

Dead ash turns brittle within a few years, and the limbs a climber would tie into can snap without warning. We reach it from the bucket or rig it from a sound neighboring tree instead.

The dead ash is at the back of my lot, away from the house. Can it wait?

If it could only fall into open ground, it is less urgent. If it could reach a fence, a shed, a neighbor's yard or a path people use, it should come down this season, before it gets more brittle.

Who owns the tree between the sidewalk and the street?

Usually the city, not the homeowner. Check with the city's public service and parks staff before anyone works on a street-side tree. We quote only for trees on your own lot.

How far is Canal Winchester for you?

A short run south from Reynoldsburg, well inside the area we work every week. You pick the window when you book, and we keep it.

Is stump grinding included?

It is quoted as a separate line at the same visit, since some people keep the stump. See stump grinding.

What happens to the wood?

Brush is chipped on site. Logs are cut to a length you can handle and left where you want them, or hauled away. You decide at the estimate.
