Tree service in Canal Winchester, Ohio
Canal Winchester is two towns wearing one name: an old village middle where big trees stand close to old houses, and newer streets growing up around it. We carry gear for both, and the town is a short run south for us, well inside the patch we work every week. You pick the time. We show up.
An old middle and a new edge
In the old part of town the trees went in generations ago and the houses were already there. Mature maples and oaks stand over porches, garages and neighboring roofs, and working on them is careful rope work in tight spaces. Out on the newer edges it is the opposite: young stock, open ground, room for the truck. The same crew does a rigged section takedown in the village in the morning and a straightforward open-lot removal on a new street after lunch, and the two jobs have almost nothing in common except the sawdust.
The ash problem is not over
Emerald ash borer has killed most of the standing ash in central Ohio, and around Canal Winchester a lot of those dead trees are still up: along fence lines, at the back of lots, on the edge of the fields the new streets back onto. Here is the part people do not know. Dead ash goes brittle fast, so brittle that no responsible climber will rope into one. It cannot be taken apart the way a live tree can. It has to be reached from outside, with the bucket or with rigging set from neighboring trees, and every year it stands it gets less predictable. A dead ash near anything you care about is a job for this season, not some season.
How a dead ash comes down
- Assessed from the ground, always Nobody climbs it. We read the tree from below: where the bark is sloughing, which limbs are already cracked, what it would hit falling in each direction.
- Machine access set first The bucket has to reach the crown from outside the tree, so where the truck can sit decides the whole plan. On a soft or awkward lot, we say so at the quote, not the day of the job.
- The top comes out in short pieces Brittle wood is cut small. Long heavy sections that would be routine on a live tree can snap and swing on a dead one, so we take less per cut and more cuts.
- The stem is blocked down onto a cleared zone Once the crown is off, the trunk comes down in rounds onto ground we have cleared and protected.
- Stump out, ground raked Ground below grade so you can seed over it, chips and rounds handled the way you asked, the lawn raked back.

Canal Winchester questions
Why can’t you just climb my dead ash and take it apart?
Because dead ash is brittle in a way most dead wood is not. Limbs that look solid snap without warning, and a climber’s whole system depends on the tree holding. So the tree gets worked from outside: bucket truck, or rigging set in sound neighboring trees. It is slower and it shows in the price, and it is the only way we will do it.
The dead tree is right on the line between me and my neighbor. Whose job is it?
A tree standing on the boundary is generally a shared matter between the two properties, and the honest first step is a conversation over the fence, not a chainsaw. We are happy to look at it with both of you on the same visit and put one written price on it. What we will not do is take down a line tree on one side’s say-so.
The tree by the road looks half dead. Can I have you take it?
Only if it is yours. The strip between the sidewalk and the street usually belongs to the municipality, and the trees in it are theirs to manage. Check who owns the ground it stands on before booking anyone. If it is on your side, we will quote it like any other tree.
Will my homeowner’s insurance pay to remove the dead ash before it falls?
No. Preventive removal of a standing tree is not covered, however dead the tree is. Cover generally begins when a tree damages a structure. Which is the strongest argument for dealing with a dead ash now: the removal you pay for today is cheaper than the deductible on the garage it lands on.
Is Canal Winchester inside your normal area?
Yes, comfortably. It is a short run south from our patch, the kind of drive we make every week. You pick a window when you book and that is when the truck arrives. A tree already down or hanging is different: that is emergency tree service, so call.
