Oak tree pruning, done in winter
An oak cut in spring or summer can pick up oak wilt through the fresh wound, and a red oak that catches it rarely lives out the year. So we prune oaks once the leaves are down, from late fall through the end of winter. Book your window now and the work is done while it is safe.
Why the calendar matters with oaks
Oak wilt is a fungus that blocks the water-carrying wood inside the tree. Small sap beetles carry its spores from a sick oak to any fresh cut or torn limb on a healthy one, and they are busiest in spring and early summer. The Ohio Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture puts the highest risk at April through July and advises leaving oaks alone from bud break until the leaves drop. (Ohio Chapter ISA, oak wilt)
Once the leaves are off, the beetles are gone and the risk goes with them. That is why a good oak pruning job is a winter job: the cut heals over before spring, and as a bonus the bare crown shows us every crossing limb, dead branch and weak fork without a summer canopy hiding them.
Which oaks are most at risk
Oaks with pointed leaf tips, the red oak group, take it hardest. Pin oak, northern red oak and black oak can go from the first wilted leaves to dead in a single season. White oak, bur oak and swamp white oak, the ones with rounded leaf edges, are less susceptible and decline more slowly. Either way, a lost oak is decades you do not get back.
The disease also travels underground. Oaks growing near each other often share grafted roots, and most new infections move from one oak to the next that way. One careless summer cut can cost a whole row of trees along a property line.
What a winter oak visit covers
- We look at the whole crown with the leaves down Dead wood, limbs over the roof or the driveway, crossing branches rubbing bark off each other, and any fork that has started to open.
- You get a written plan and price What we would take, what we would leave, and why. Most oaks need a careful clean-out and some clearance, not a heavy cut.
- The work is done before spring A climber or the bucket lift, cuts made at the branch collar so they close over cleanly, and the brush chipped and hauled.
- The yard is put back Frozen ground carries the truck with far less damage to the lawn than soft spring soil.

What people ask about oaks
When is the best time to prune an oak tree in Ohio?
After the leaves drop and before the buds break in spring, which around here is roughly November through February. Leave oaks alone from April through July, when oak wilt spreads most easily.
What if an oak is damaged in a summer storm?
A torn limb is an open wound either way, so leaving it hanging does not help. We clean the break back to a proper cut and seal it the same day, which is the one time an oak gets wound paint. Then the rest of the pruning waits for winter.
How do I know if my oak already has oak wilt?
In summer, leaves wilt and turn bronze or brown from the edges inward, starting at the top of the crown, and whole branches can brown out at once while the leaves are still on. If you see that on a red oak, call. We will tell you what we see and whether the trees next to it are at risk.
Can I keep the firewood from an oak that died of wilt?
Burn it at home this season or have it hauled. Moving that wood to a cabin or a friend’s place can carry the disease with it, so we will tell you at the visit if a tree’s wood should not travel.
Does a winter visit cost anything?
The visit and the written estimate are free. For what removals and larger jobs usually run, see tree removal prices.
